Hyperterminal Connection to the FCI E3 Series Addressable Fire Alarm Panel

Laptop programming for FCI E3 fire alarm control panelUnfortunately the LCD-80 alarm annunciator on the FCI E3 series addressable fire alarm system only shows 80 characters. Now this may seem like a lot but in reality, this limited amount of data makes it hard to read when performing your annual fire alarm testing. This is where Hyperterminal comes in. If you connect you fire alarm programming laptop to the FCI E3 series addressable fire alarm control panel via Hyperterminal than you will make your life so much easier. To connect to the FCI E3 series fire alarm control panel using this method, you will need the standard fire alarm cable for programming, a laptop and the Hyperterminal program. Connect one end of the fire alarm cable for programming to the DB9 port on your laptop and the other end to the RS232 terminals on the ILI-MB-E3 (motherboard).

Once connected start up Hyperterminal. You will be asked to make a new profile. Label the new profile FCI E3 and use the Hypertermianl settings found in one of my older posts.

Now that you have successfully linked your laptop to the addressable fire alarm system, simply press enter on the keyboard to view the panels display through your computer's screen. This makes things so easy since it keeps a log and you can scroll up or down at anytime.

  1. If your laptop is Windows Vista or Windows 7, you will not have Hyperterminal available. You can either:
    - Download TeraTerm
    - Use CAMWorks 2.0 which has a built-in terminal program

Within the CAMWorks 2.0 OTS terminal program, you will have access to troubleshooting commands like device monitor, history logs, and service mode.

  2. You are correct with the new CamWorks software, it is great. However if you email me I can get you a file to run Hyperterminal on your machine with windosw 7 or Vista.

  5. The walktest can be programmed for a maximum of 180 minutes throught the CamWorks software via a laptop. The factory default is 30 minutes. Hope this helps.
