New Duct Smoke Detector Test Tool

Guess what!  We have just invented and patented a tool for testing System Sensor duct detectors and any other fire protection device that accept magnets as a means of initiating and alarm condition.  This device is called the Mag-Mate and it will drastically reduce the testing and inspection time of all hard to reach fire alarm devices.  Our motive behind this invention was to make a simple yet effective tool that every fire alarm technician can carry in their tool bags.

The Mag-Mate simply connects to the end of any 1/2" EMT (electro metallic tubing) conduit which we figured every fire alarm installer's vehicle should have on hand.  Once connected to the end of the conduit you will have a 12" flexible tube with magnet to navigate around ducting, automatic sprinkler pipes, framing, etc.  Our employees have seen too many duct smoke detectors mounted by HVAC contractors above the actual air conditioning duct work.  This usually makes it very hard to get the test magnet in place due to tough angles.  You will notice that the 12" flexible tube will eliminate this issue.  The Mag-Mate also includes an attachment to mount a Mag-Lite flashlight for easy visibility in dark ceiling spaces.

Now you might say, "We have the Solo Tester at our shop." but the truth is the Solo Tester does not have the necessary attachments to test System Sensor duct smoke detectors.  Also repetitive use of simulated canned smoke can drastically reduce the sensitivity of photoelectric fire protection detectors.  This is why device manufacturers recommend the use of magnets.  On another note, the complete Solo Tester kit can retail for around $3,200.

We have not yet established a cost for the Mag-Mate as the prototype is being wrapped up this week.  Once we establish build costs we will release this information.  Below is a rough sketch of the Mag-Mate to help you understand the simplicity of the product.  Any feedback regarding this product would be greatly appreciated as we strongly feel this is one of those tools we can all benefit from.

  1. Are there any fire alarm wiring classes that I can get my staff into that are worth while?

  2. there are a lot of classes out there. Check with ADI online to see if they are currently offering any programs. Also check out the books in this post. They should be helpful. I also sell a study DVD that has tons of valuable info for you and your staff.
