Lethal Weapon 4 Pull Station and Fire Sprinklers

Okay, I am sure we have all seen the movie Lethal Weapon [Blu-ray] staring Danny Glover, Mel Gibson, Chris Rock, etc. Awesome action film, right? Yeah however, there is one seen that is just not up to par. At least in the world of fire alarms.

Every time I watch this movie I laugh at this scene. Mel Gibson (Officer Riggs) is at a restaurant and decides it would be funny to activate the addressable manual fire alarm pull station on his way out. But first he whips out his trusty umbrella like it's a common event for the automatic sprinklers to activate with this type of fire alarm.

Now you might be saying this could be a deluge system activated by a manual dump. Nice try but the answer is definitely NO. In this occupancy group, most likely a Group A-2 you would never see a deluge system. On top of that, take a look at the sprinkler head when activated in the scene. It is a standard response glass bulb style head.

There are many movies with this common misconception out there. Now it could be a mistake due to lack of fire alarm industry knowledge or it could simply be a way to spice up the scene. You be the judge.
