Smoke Detector Spacing with Beams

Smoke Detector Spacing for Smooth Ceilings


Let's start with the basics of smoke detector spacing.  Based on 2022 NFPA 72, there is not a listed spacing for smoke detectors. Instead, you are instructed to consult with the smoke detector's published documentation.  However, NFPA 72 2022 edition section 17.7.4.2.3.1 states the following, "In the absence of specific performance based design criteria, one of the following requirements shall apply:
  1. The distance between smoke detectors shall not exceed a nominal spacing of 30 feet and there shall be detectors within a distance of one-half the nominal spacing, measured at right angles from all walls or partitions extending upward to within the top 15 percent of the ceiling height.
  2. All points on the ceiling shall have a detector within a distance equal to or less than 0.7 times the nominal 30 foot spacing.
What does this mean?

Number 1 above states you must have a smoke detector within one half the nominal spacing from walls.  One half of 30 feet is 15 feet.  In the image below you will see a total of six yellow circles each with a 30 foot diameter.  These circles represent the area covered by a spot type smoke detector based on a nominal spacing of 30 feet. As required by the 2022 NFPA 72, we have spaced each detector at 15 feet from walls and 30 feet apart.

What about the white areas not covered?

If you notice in the image, there are areas not covered by the yellow circles representing the smoke detector coverage.  This is where NFPA 72 2022 edition section 17.7.4.2.3.1 criteria number two comes into play.  

With a nominal spacing of 30 feet, you must insure that all areas of the ceiling have coverage within 0.7 times this 30 foot amount.  To find this distance, simply multiply 30 feet by 0.7 to get 21 feet.

If you use Pythagorean's Theorem you will come up with a surprising result.  Remember Pythagorean's Theorem is used to find the unknown side of a right triangle and is expressed as A squared + B squared = C squared.  In this case we have a right triangle in each quadrant of the yellow circles.  Each quadrant is 15 feet our and 15 feet up.  We can write this equations as:

15 squared + 15 squared = C squared 
225 + 225 = 450 squared
450 squared = 21.2132 feet

In the image below you will see a cleared depiction of how this all comes together. With this, it is clear that we have met the intent of the standard by mounting our smoke detectors 15 feet from the walls, 30 feet apart and still achieve 0.7 times the nominal spacing (21 feet) coverage at all points of the ceiling.

NFPA and Smoke Detector Spacing Distances


The Annex of NFPA 72 provides us with a diagram to assist in smoke detector spacing. Note that smoke detectors are not listed for spacing.  Use the smoke detector's published installation documents and the spacing breakdown below to assist in your design.

For areas/corridors 10 feet wide, smoke detectors can be spaced at 41 feet.
For areas/corridors 15 feet wide, smoke detectors can be spaced at 39 feet.
For areas 20 feet wide, smoke detectors can be spaced at 37 feet.
For areas 25 feet wide, smoke detectors can be spaced at 34 feet.
For areas 30 feet wide, smoke detectors can be spaced at 30 feet.

If your ceiling configuration involves beams, your smoke detector coverage can get a bit more tricky.
NFPA 72 2022 edition section 17.7.4.2.4.2 deals with level ceilings with beams. In a nutshell, this is how it breaks down:
  • If the beam depth is LESS than 10% of the overall ceiling height, then smooth ceiling spacing for smoke detection can be applied.  Also note that in this scenario, you can choose to install the smoke detectors on the ceiling or the bottom of the beams. Reference the above text and images for smooth ceiling spacing.
  • If the beams are are equal to or greater than 10% of the overall ceiling height, two scenarios are possible:
    • If the beam depth is equal to or greater than 10% but less than 40%, use smooth ceiling spacing PARALLEL to the beams and one half spacing PERPENDICULAR to the beams.  With this scenario, the smoke detectors can be mounted on the ceiling or the bottom of the beams.
    • If the beam depth is equal to or greater than 40%, a smoke detector shall be placed on the ceiling within each beam pocket.  Keep in mind that more than one smoke detector may be required to cover a given beam pocket.

How to Calculate Smoke Detector Spacing with Beam Construction

Smoke Detector Spacing in Corridors with Beams 


What do you do if you have a corridor that is equal to or less than 15 feet in width with beams running perpendicular to the length of the corridor?  Consult NFPA 72 2022 section 17.7.4.2.4.2 (4).  This section of the standard allows you to use smooth ceiling spacing and the smoke detectors can be mounted on the ceiling, bottom of the beams or on the sidewall.

Smoke Detector Spacing in Rooms 900 Square Feet or Less


NFPA 72 2022 section 17.7.4.2.4.2 (5) allows the use of smooth ceiling spacing for smoke detection coverage in rooms that are equal to or less than 900 square feet.  You can also install the smoke detector on the ceiling or bottom of the beam.

Licensed R-2.1 Fire Alarm Requirements | California Residential Care

Licensed Group R-2.1 occupancies are a special California residential occupancy classification associated with residential care and assisted-living environments. These facilities can be subject to fire alarm requirements beyond those applicable to a standard Group R-2 residential occupancy.

One of the most important requirements involves Licensed R-2.1 facilities housing more than six nonambulatory elderly clients. Under the California Building and Fire Code framework, these facilities require an approved manual and automatic fire alarm system, except where the specific code exception is satisfied.

Important distinction: This article specifically addresses Licensed Group R-2.1 occupancies. It should not be used as the general fire alarm criteria for ordinary Group R-2 residential buildings. For standard residential requirements, see our Group R-2 and R-2.1 Fire Alarm Requirements guide.

What Is a Licensed Group R-2.1 Occupancy?

Group R-2.1 is a California-specific occupancy classification associated with residential facilities providing personal care and supervision to occupants on a 24-hour basis.

These facilities can include certain residential care and assisted-living environments. Because residents can have varying abilities to respond to an emergency and evacuate without assistance, California establishes additional fire and life-safety requirements for qualifying facilities.

The exact occupancy classification and licensing status should always be confirmed before determining the required fire alarm design.

When Is a Fire Alarm System Required in a Licensed R-2.1 Facility?

California requires Licensed Group R-2.1 occupancies housing more than six nonambulatory elderly clients to be provided with an approved:

  • Manual fire alarm system, and
  • Automatic fire alarm system.

This is an important difference between a qualifying Licensed R-2.1 facility and an ordinary Group R-2 residential building.

Designers should not apply the standard Group R-2 fire alarm thresholds to a Licensed R-2.1 facility without first determining whether these additional California requirements apply.

Exception for Certain First-Story Facilities

The California code provides an important exception for qualifying buildings housing nonambulatory clients on the first story only.

The exception requires the building to be protected throughout by the prescribed combination of fire-protection features, including:

  • An approved and supervised automatic sprinkler system meeting the applicable sprinkler requirements.
  • Sprinkler activation that initiates the fire alarm system and provides occupant notification.
  • A manual fire alarm system.
  • The smoke alarms required by the applicable code provisions.
Design Note: This exception should not be interpreted as eliminating fire alarm protection. It changes the automatic fire alarm requirement only where all applicable conditions of the exception are satisfied.

Automatic Smoke Detection in Licensed R-2.1

This is one of the most important differences between Licensed R-2.1 and standard residential occupancies.

Where the Licensed R-2.1 provisions require an automatic fire alarm system, the required automatic detection must be designed in accordance with the applicable California Building Code, California Fire Code and NFPA 72 requirements.

Do not confuse the required automatic fire alarm/detection system with the individual residential smoke alarms installed in dwelling or sleeping areas. These are separate parts of the overall fire-protection strategy.

Smoke Alarms vs. System Smoke Detectors

Smoke alarms and system smoke detectors are not interchangeable terms.

Smoke alarms are typically listed to UL 217 and provide the residential smoke-alarm protection required within dwelling or sleeping areas.

System smoke detectors are typically listed to UL 268 and are components of a fire alarm system. Where automatic smoke detection is required, these detectors communicate with the fire alarm control equipment and can initiate required building fire alarm functions.

A Licensed R-2.1 facility can therefore contain both smoke alarms and system smoke detectors, each serving a different code-required purpose.

Smoke Alarm Requirements

Smoke alarms are required in applicable R-2.1 dwelling and sleeping areas regardless of whether additional automatic system smoke detection is required.

Required locations generally include:

  • In each room used for sleeping purposes.
  • Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms.
  • On each story within the dwelling unit, subject to the applicable provisions for basements, split levels and similar conditions.

Smoke alarms must also comply with the applicable requirements for power, interconnection, listing and installation.

Manual Fire Alarm System

Where required for a Licensed R-2.1 occupancy, the manual fire alarm system must initiate the required building fire alarm functions and occupant notification in accordance with the applicable code and NFPA 72.

Manual fire alarm box locations, travel distance, accessibility and permitted exceptions should be determined from the adopted code rather than assuming that a pull station is simply required at every door.

This is a change from older versions of this article, which stated broadly that manual fire alarm boxes were required at all exits with a 200-foot maximum travel distance. The current design should instead be based on the applicable manual fire alarm box provisions and the specific configuration of the required system.

Sprinkler System Interface

Automatic sprinkler protection plays an especially important role in Licensed R-2.1 occupancies.

Where the code exception for certain first-story facilities is used, the sprinkler system must satisfy the applicable code conditions and initiate the fire alarm system to notify occupants.

Sprinkler waterflow, control-valve supervisory signals and other required sprinkler supervisory functions must be coordinated with the fire alarm system and supervising-station requirements.

Fire Alarm Notification Requirements

Where a building fire alarm system provides occupant notification, audible and visible notification must be designed for the occupants and spaces being protected.

Licensed residential care facilities deserve particular attention because occupants can have different physical, sensory and evacuation capabilities.

Final notification design should therefore consider:

  • Audible notification in occupied areas.
  • Sleeping-area notification.
  • Low-frequency audible requirements where applicable.
  • Visible notification.
  • Accessibility requirements.
  • The needs of occupants who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Visible Notification in Group R-2.1

California contains specific visible-notification provisions for Group R-2.1 sleeping accommodations.

Applicable dwelling or sleeping accommodations must be evaluated for required visible alarm notification. Where required, the visible notification is coordinated with both the in-room smoke alarm and the building fire alarm system.

The number of sleeping accommodations requiring visible notification depends on the number of sleeping units and the applicable accessibility provisions.

This requirement is different from the future-adaptability provisions that apply to standard Group R-2 occupancies. Designers should not interchange the two requirements.

Occupants Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

California also contains specific provisions addressing notification for occupants who are deaf or hard of hearing in applicable protective social-care facilities, including Group R-2.1.

These requirements should be coordinated with NFPA 72 and the applicable accessibility provisions during initial design rather than treated as an afterthought after construction.

520 Hz Low-Frequency Sleeping-Area Notification

Sleeping-area audible notification must be evaluated for the applicable low-frequency requirements where fire alarm notification is required.

Do not assume that a conventional fire alarm horn automatically satisfies the requirements for sleeping-room notification.

Fire Alarm Audibility

Required audible notification appliances must meet the applicable NFPA 72 sound-level requirements for the area being protected.

Sleeping areas require particular attention because the required sound level is evaluated at the pillow in the occupiable sleeping area and must be coordinated with the applicable low-frequency requirements.

Ambient sound levels, room construction, doors, appliance location and the characteristics of the notification appliance can all affect the final design.

Fire Alarm Monitoring

Where required, the fire alarm system must transmit applicable alarm, supervisory and trouble signals in accordance with the adopted California Building Code, California Fire Code and NFPA 72 supervising-station requirements.

Monitoring requirements should be coordinated with sprinkler waterflow, valve supervisory switches and other connected fire-protection systems.

Licensed R-2.1 Fire Alarm Design Checklist

  • Confirm that the facility is actually classified as Licensed Group R-2.1.
  • Confirm the facility's licensing classification.
  • Determine the number and capabilities of the clients being housed.
  • Determine whether more than six nonambulatory elderly clients are housed in the facility.
  • Determine whether clients are located above the first story.
  • Verify the required automatic sprinkler protection.
  • Determine whether the automatic fire alarm system requirement applies.
  • Determine whether the first-story exception applies.
  • Verify the required manual fire alarm system.
  • Identify required residential smoke-alarm locations.
  • Identify required automatic system smoke detection.
  • Coordinate sprinkler waterflow and supervisory functions.
  • Verify sleeping-area audible notification.
  • Verify applicable 520 Hz low-frequency requirements.
  • Verify visible-notification and accessibility requirements.
  • Verify monitoring and supervising-station requirements.
  • Confirm the adopted California code edition and local amendments with the AHJ.

UL 268 Automatic Smoke Detection Requirements:

On all HVAC units over 2,000 CFM (Duct Detector)
For releasing service
Fire Smoke Dampers
Delayed egress locks

UL 216 Smoke Alarm Requirements:


Single or multiple station smoke alarms shall be installed in all I-4 occupancies used for Large Family Day Care.

Fire Alarm Notification Requirements:


Audible (horns, sounders, speakers, etc.) shall be located in non-patient areas.  Visible appliances (strobes) are allowed to be used in place of audible appliances in patient occupied areas.  Keep in mind that if you choose to use audible appliances in patient occupied areas they must be chimes or similar sounding appliances to alert the staff. 

Using a sound pressure meter or dB Meter, verify you comply with the following:

Public Mode Audibility: You must have 15 dB above average ambient sound level or 5 dB above the maximum sound level for at least 60 seconds whichever is greater.

Fire Alarm Requirements for Group I-3 Occupancy

Group I-3 (Institutional)


Systems required to be monitored per the 2021 IFC section 907.6.6.

A manual fire alarm system (Manual fire alarm boxes) along with an automatic smoke detection system that alerts the staff.

Activation of an automatic fire extinguishing system (ANSUL, FM-200, etc.), automatic sprinkler system, manual pull station or detector shall initiate an approved signal to notify the staff.

Manual Fire Alarm Box Requirements:


Manual fire alarm boxes can be eliminated in areas where staff is present and have direct supervision over said areas.

Manual fire alarm boxes can be locked in areas that contain detainees.  This is predicated on the staff with keys being present in these areas.

UL 268 Automatic Smoke Detection Requirements:


System smoke detectors shall be provided for all of the following applications:

Above control panels and power supplies
For the purpose of elevator capture
On all HVAC units over 2,000 CFM (Duct Detector)
For releasing service
Fire Smoke Dampers
Delayed egress locks

Smoke detectors shall be installed throughout resident housing areas, including sleeping units, contiguous day rooms, group activity spaces as well as other spaces normally accessible to residents.

Exceptions:

If approved and if it provides equivalent protection, you can use other methods to obtain detection to avoid tampering or damage to the detectors.  This includes but is not limited to placing detectors behind protective guards or in the exhaust duct from inmate cells.

Sleeping units in Use Conditions 2 and 3 as described in Section 308 of the 2021 IBC International Building Code

When equipped with an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors are not required in sleeping units that have four or fewer occupants in smoke compartments.

Fire Alarm Notification Requirements:

Using a sound pressure meter or dB Meter, verify you comply with the following:

Public Mode Audibility: You must have 15 dB above average ambient sound level or 5 dB above the maximum sound level for at least 60 seconds whichever is greater.

Fire Alarm Requirements for Group I-2.1 Occupancy

Group I-2.1 (Institutional) - This occupancy is no longer referenced in the 2021 IFC or 2021 IBC


Systems required to be monitored per the 2021 IFC section 907.6.6.

A manual fire alarm system (Manual fire alarm boxes) along with an automatic smoke detection system that activates the occupant notification system (horns, strobes, sounders, speakers, chimes, mass notification, etc.)

Automatic smoke detection system shall be installed in corridors of nursing homes, long term care facilities and spaces permitted to be open to the corridors.  Hospitals shall have smoke detection.

Exceptions:

Manual fire alarm boxes at exits in sleeping units shall not be required if manual pull boxes are located at all care providers’ stations or other approved staff locations.  Note: the pull stations must be visible/accessible and the travel distance to any pull box shall not exceed 200 feet.

Corridor smoke detection is not required in smoke compartments containing sleeping units pending the sleeping units having smoke detectors that comply with UL 268.  These detectors shall also have a visual display (LED Indicator plate) on the corridor side of each sleeping unit as well as activation of a visual/audible signal at the nurse's station.

If the sleeping unit doors are equipped with automatic door-closing devices with integral smoke detectors than corridor smoke detection shall not be required.  This is predicated on the integral smoke detectors within the door closing hardware being able to send the required visual/audible indication to the nurse's station.

UL 268 Automatic Smoke Detection Requirements:


System smoke detectors shall be provided for all of the following applications:

Above control panels and power supplies

Smoke detectors shall be installed throughout resident housing areas, including sleeping units, contiguous day rooms, group activity spaces as well as other spaces normally accessible to residents.

“Exceptions”

If approved and if it provides equivalent protection, you can use other methods to obtain detection to avoid tampering or damage to the detectors.  This includes but is not limited to placing detectors behind protective guards or in the exhaust duct from inmate cells.

Sleeping units in Use Conditions 2 and 3 as described in Section 308 of the IBC International Building Code

When equipped with an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors are not required in sleeping units that have four or fewer occupants in smoke compartments.

Fire Alarm Notification Requirements:


Audible (horns, sounders, speakers, etc.) shall be located in non-patient areas.  Visible appliances (strobes) are allowed to be used in place of audible appliances in patient occupied areas.  Keep in mind that if you choose to use audible appliances in patient occupied areas they must be chimes or similar sounding appliances to alert the staff. 

Public Mode Audibility: You must have 15 dB above average ambient sound level or 5 dB above the maximum sound level for at least 60 seconds whichever is greater.

Fire Alarm Requirements for Group I-1 Occupancy

Group I-1 (Institutional)


Systems required to be monitored per the 2021 IFC section 907.6.6.

A manual fire alarm system (Manual fire alarm boxes) along with an automatic smoke detection system that activates the occupant notification system (horns, strobes, sounders, speakers, chimes, mass notification, etc.)

Automatic smoke detection system shall be installed in corridors, waiting areas open to corridors and habitable spaces other than kitchens and sleeping units.

Exceptions:

 Manual fire alarm boxes in sleeping units shall not be required at the exits if manual fire alarm boxes are located at all care providers’ stations or other approved staff locations.  Note: the manual fire alarm boxes must be visible/accessible and the travel distance to any Manual fire alarm box shall not exceed 200 feet.

If the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) allows, the occupant notification systems are not required to be activated where private mode signaling is used in accordance with NFPA 72.

Smoke detection in habitable areas is not required where the Group I-1 facility is equipped with an approved automatic sprinkler system.

Smoke detection is not required for exterior balconies.


Smoke Alarms


Single Station Smoke Alarms shall be installed in accordance with section 907.2.11
